When I’d finished showering, I straightened my shoulders and headed into the living area of the cabin. It was quiet. Growing dark. Light shone from the kitchen. The aroma of steaks cooking made my stomach rumble, and I remembered I hadn’t eaten since that morning when I’d stopped for a breakfast sandwich at a drive thru before leaving Houston.
When I entered the kitchen, it was to find Caleb there, tending two steaks on the grill, frowning at the stovetop. “Where are the guys?”
“They left.”
I blew out a breath and looked at my toes. “Are you okay? Are they?”
“We talked. They understand.” Something clinked against the counter. “Look at me, Tamara.”
I glanced upward, blinking rapidly because tears were beginning to fill my eyes.
His voice lost its edginess, and he sighed. “Dammit, come here.”
I came to his side, and wrapped my arms around him, breathing in his scent—a mixture of soap and him. “They’re your best friends.”
“And they still are. But they both told me to get my head screwed on right. To tell you that I love you.”
“What?”
He grunted, and some of the tension in his mouth eased as he gave me a crooked smile. “They said I love you and you love me. And then they asked me what the fuck I was doing?”
“They said I love you?”
“Don’t you?”
My glance fell away. “Of course, I do—”
“Don’t you dare say it’s because I’m your brother.”
“I wasn’t.” I lifted my head to lock my gaze with his. “I was going to add, that I don’t expect you to feel the same way I do.”
“You barely blinked when I said I wanted to share you with them.”
“Because I was already mad as hell they were here. And then…I figured, if it was something you really needed…I should be all right with it.”
“You weren’t?”
I rolled my eyes. “In the moment, I was. But as soon as it was over…” Tears burned my eyes again. “It felt like a mistake. The way you looked at me, I thought you were done with me.”
Caleb turned off the stove and keeping one arm around me, used tongs to pick up the steaks and set them on a platter. “These are going to get cold.”
I didn’t question him as he took hold of my hand and led me through the cabin to his bedroom. Once inside, I stood without speaking as he peeled away his clothing, and then quickly removed mine. Then he drew me to the bed, tugging me down to lie beside him, both of us on our sides facing each other.
Shadows deepened around us as the dusk turned to night. He was faced away from the window, so I couldn’t see his expression. No doubt the moonlight shining on mine allowed him to see everything. I took a big breath. “What are we doing, Caleb?”
He laid his palm alongside my cheek. “I wanted this to be a week you’d never forget.”
I made a little huffing sound. “Well, you succeeded.”
“We won’t have this place anymore to come to during our breaks.
